New safety requirements for where carbon monoxide (CO) alarms must be placed came into effect on January 1, 2026.
Where Must Carbon Monoxide Alarms Be Installed?
Any home that meets any of the following conditions:
- Has a fuel-burning appliance installed (furnace, water heater, or stove that uses natural gas / propane / oil / wood)
- A fireplace
- An attached garage
- Air for heating that comes from a fuel-burning appliance not installed within the home (effective January 1, 2026)
Alarm Installation Locations
If your home meets any of the above conditions, you must install a carbon monoxide alarm in these two locations:
- Adjacent to each sleeping area (near all bedrooms)
- On every storey (floor) of your home, including storeys that do not have a sleeping area (effective January 1, 2026)
