When temperatures drop, water pipes can freeze, burst, and cause expensive damage. Here’s a few easy steps to take now to prevent frozen pipes later:
- Keep areas with pipes warm (especially basements, garages, and cabinets)
- Insulate pipes near outside walls
- Seal drafts around doors, windows, and vents
- Keep garage doors closed if water lines run through them
- Open cupboard doors to let warm air reach pipes
- Watch for frost on pipes or low water pressure
- Homes with low occupancy or little water use freeze faster - run water regularly
- Let the cold tap drip slightly during extreme cold to keep water moving
Heading out of town? Leave the heat on and have someone check in while you’re away.
