Operations Employee (Seasonal)
Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Operations Foreperson, the successful candidate will operate heavy equipment and possess a valid DZ. This position will require the successful candidate to perform road patrolling and maintenance on Town roads and infrastructure. Participation in all aspects of Public Works operations including physical labour (digging, lifting etc.) will be expected to maintain all properties, equipment and buildings during various weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operating fleet for the purpose of maintain and carrying out construction duties on Town infrastructure including, but not limited to roads, bridges and stormwater.
- Perform road and sidewalk monitoring and patrol duties as required under the Minimum Maintenance Standard (MMS) O.Reg. 239/02, as amended.
- Be an integral member of the operations team that carries out winter road and sidewalk maintenance (sanding/salting, snow plowing, ice blading etc.), as per MMS.
- Available to respond in a timely manner and work on a 24-hour call-out basis, evening and weekend shifts, stand-by and overtime. On-call, after hours call-out’s for road maintenance requirements include, but are not limited to road closures, removal & disposal of fallen trees, bridge & culverts, hard top & loose top surface patching and sign repairs/replacements.
- Carry out duties as required as part of Town operations to assist external contractors with operations such as; tree removal, gravel resurfacing and the application of calcium chloride to the gravel road network.
- Perform routine maintenance of roadside vegetation, including trimming, sightline clearing and brushing.
- Perform required summer and winter maintenance at Town properties such as; community facilities, Town Hall, Parks, Storm Management Ponds and Water & Wastewater facilities.
- Install, repair and maintain temporary & permanent fencing, safety devices for traffic control & calming, signs and guardrails.
- Fleet maintenance that includes but is not limited to; greasing, cleaning, minor repairs and service to ensure the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the vehicle and equipment operation, while maximizing their lifecycle.
- Maintain responsibility for assigned fleet and materials and ensure they are available at the time and location required.
- Work in a safe manner and adhere to all Town policies and procedures, Ontario Health & Safety Act (OHSA), WHIMS and any other applicable regulations and laws.
- Participate in regular Town training courses, seminars, safety talks, as required.
- Ability to professionally and respectfully represent the Town during any interactions with the public, contractors or others that may occur from time to time.
- Complete diary entries/ record keeping for all daily functions or as directed by your supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:
Education
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
Experience
- A minimum of (2) years experience operating heavy equipment is considered an asset.
- Any training courses relevant to public works infrastructure is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual, Book 7 – Temporary conditions.
- Knowledge of the Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS), as per O.Reg. 239/02.
Skills
Possess:
- Valid Ontario Class DZ license.

Significant mental attention is required due to the high variety of tasks, many involving complexity and upholding public safety. Position is subject to regular and sporadic deadlines, frequent interruptions and time pressures.

Salary:
The Operations Employee is on the Town’s Salary Grid (2026) $32.17- $37.63 per hour (Job Rate). Minimum 40-hour work week, plus mandatory weekends & overtime.
