POSITION PURPOSE

Public Works is seeking a part-time, team-oriented and motivated individual to join our Public Works team.  As a School Crossing Guard, you will carry out important tasks to ensure the safety of children and the community at the Mono-Amaranth Public school crossing, located on Dufferin Road 7 (Hockley Road), approximately 185m east of Highway 10.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure pedestrians are safely assisted at the designated school crossing from 8:15am-9:05am and 2:45pm-3:45pm from Monday-Friday.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the public, ensuring safe crossing rules are communicated clearly, followed and reinforced as required.
  • Document and communicate all incidents and/or unsafe conditions to management, school officials and/or Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
  • Adhere to emergency vehicle right of way, ensuring they have priority over both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Comply with all safety requirements by using and wearing all required safety equipment and clothing.
  • Assist in training new crossing guards as required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have good judgement and ability to remain alert and observant to traffic and children.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (including documentation) and customer service skills with ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff, pedestrians, residents, school officials and police.
  • Must be able to walk / stand repeatedly in and out of intersection for a minimum of 1 hour, 2 times a day.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to carry and hold a “STOP” sign that has a weight of approximately (1 – 5 pounds) for a minimum of one hour at a time.
  • Must be punctual.
  • Must be able to effectively hear and see oncoming traffic at a safe distance.
  • Experience dealing with the public and/or children is an asset.
  • Must be able to work in the mornings and afternoons, from Monday to Friday.
  • A Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required (upon hire).
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and all other required equipment will be provided by the Town.

COMPENSATION

The School Crossing Guard position on the Town’s 2025 salary grid from, $22.74 to $26.60 (Job Rate).

HOURS OF WORK

Hours of work shall be 10-hours per week, Monday to Friday.  Legislated benefits (vacation pay, stat holidays, overtime pay etc.) will be in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.
